10 Tips to Stay Calm and Thrive Under Pressure

While work can be fulfilling, there are times when you feel like it’s too much. It could be because of a challenging project or the number of tasks you must complete in a given time. For some, facing this pressure is manageable, but for others, it can be too much, affecting their capability to stay calm and perform.

Fortunately, there are various ways to handle the pressure and stay calm. To get you started, here are 10 tips to help you out with the pressure work gives you:

#1 Analyse The Situation Realistically

When in a challenging situation, your mind goes into overdrive, and it could either make you think that the situation is too severe or zoom into the what-ifs. If you are not able to control your mind when it goes into this tangent, your imagination will run wild with negative ideas that will disable you from seeing what is possible to do.

To keep yourself calm, get your mind back into reality and analyze the situation carefully. Consider what can happen, what is the best-case scenario, and how long it will take for you to recover from it. Be realistic with your answers because if you exaggerate them, it will only add to the unnecessary pressure you are currently dreading.

#2 Consider Your Experience

You can also lean towards your past experiences to manage the pressure and stay calm.

When under pressure, consider looking back at any similar problems you had and recall how you dealt with the problem. Once you analyze the problem and see how you can apply your past experiences to the matter, you will slowly notice that the pressure you are feeling is lifted since you already know what to do.

#3 Focus On The Next Step You Can Take

Pressure causes people to rush things to free themselves from it. However, thinking about the task you need to deal with can be overwhelming and affect your progress.

In this situation, you can transform that feeling into your motivation. Take small steps to help you move forward, and as you progress, you can shake off that fear and pressure to complete the task.

#4 Change Your Habits To Healthy Ones

It is possible to help you stay calm by practising healthy habits that will keep your stress levels manageable and give you the energy to move forward each day. Some habits you can incorporate in your life include getting enough sleep before work, exercising and eating a balanced diet.

#5 Give Yourself Some Me Time

Taking a break, even for a little bit, can also help you stay calm and manage the pressure you may be feeling. Take a 15-minute walk when you feel like the pressure is too much, and use the time to get your feelings in check before getting back to it. You can also use the time to talk to a colleague.

#6 Breathe In Deeply

When you feel like the stress is starting to affect you, take a deep breath and exhale. Repeat the step several times until you are fully focused and at ease.

#7 Focus On The Pros

Once you feel the pressure, you may find it hard to think about the positive side of the situation before you. But, if you think about the positives immediately, you can calm yourself down and have a better mindset to deal with the pressure you are in.

Thinking about the positives and benefits will also help you realize that even if the situation is challenging, it is an opportunity you can use to grow. As you persist in this mindset, you can develop a positive mindset easily.

#8 Consider Your End Targets

Aside from thinking about the benefits of the challenging situation before you, think about your end goals. What do you plan to do after this tough situation? Do you want to fight for promotion or take a well-deserved break? By thinking about these goals, you can clear your mind and focus on what you need to do.

#9 Set Limits

Don’t be afraid to set limits if you feel like the pressure is getting too much. Having limits helps you give yourself more time and think about the tasks before you rather than what is up next.

#10 Be Ready For Anything

It is best to always be on your toes because even if you plan ahead, certain events may not go as planned.

When one is not ready to prepare for these unexpected events, any changes can throw you off and make you anxious about what will happen. To counter this problem, train your brain to expect any surprising event with the help of the pre-mortem technique. With this technique, you will be able to think ahead and prepare how you will deal with any issues that may arise whenever it happens.

Whether it is work or life in general, there will always be challenging situations that will take us out of our comfort zone and put us under pressure. However, instead of letting it cause us to doubt our capabilities, you need to take a proactive approach to changing your mindset to fight against pressure and be calm when confronted with challenging situations. It may take some time to do this, but when you persist, you can rise to any occasion life throws at you.
