5 Behaviours of Leaders who Embrace Change

Changes can happen at any time in business, and when they do occur, they can impact the entire business. As a business leader, you must help your team adapt to these changes and find ways to thrive. While most teams can adapt naturally to these changes, sometimes it may be complicated.

If you are uncertain about how to adapt or accept change, what can you do to change the situation? As a leader, here are the five behaviours leaders who embrace change have that you should try to emulate:

1. Applies Change-Thinking To Their Daily Activities

If you genuinely want to embrace change, you need to be open to changes and know when it can happen so you can plan. For example, if you are looking for ways to use your excess supply of PVC, ask your team what products you can make with them.

2. Establish Clear Targets And Purpose

As a leader, you must have clear targets and purpose to guide the team to deal with the changes and not resist them. Don’t hesitate to speak to your team about these targets and why change is essential to help employees be open to any changes you make.

3. Be Open To New Processes And Strategies

When change persists, it is understandable that you are reluctant to change your existing processes or strategies since they still work. However, this is not always the case, especially if the change requires significant shifts in your business operations. When your business is experiencing change and old processes don’t work well, be open to using alternative processes and strategies to improve your operations.

4. Know What Should Be Changed Or Not Working

Sometimes, companies or businesses do not know they need to change their operations because the news doesn’t travel to the higher-ups. Once a change occurs in the business, such as an integration or merger, the problems that were not immediately reported will slow down the progress. As their leader, you must be proactive in finding out what needs to be changed to help employees feel safe discussing every aspect of what happens in the business, including bad news.

5. Support Calculated Experimentation Or Risk-Taking

A leader who supports change must help their team experiment and take calculated risks. You must set up opportunities for your employees to experiment or make risky but well-planned decisions. But, make sure to be clear before your employees experiment or make difficult decisions about what level of risk or experimentation is allowed to reduce its impacts on the operations if it does not go as planned.

Whether you develop one of these behaviours or try developing all five, it will open everyone’s minds that change shouldn’t be seen as a negative thing for your business. It may take time for these behaviours to spark the change you want in your team, but the more you practice, the more open everyone becomes about trying out what is possible. Once it clicks, your business can take on the challenges your changing industry brings whenever it happens.
